It was recently reported that Stanley Ho decided to give up his entire ownership stake in his casino empire. This is a big deal as his company, SJM Holdings, owns a majority market share of the largest casino hub in the world. However, there may be many who don’t know who Stanley Ho is. They may have heard his name. They may recognize him as being the father of fellow casino entrepreneur Pansy Ho. However, his name is not as familiar with the American casino going public as Wynn, Adelson, or others. He is a very brief biography of the man who has been one of China’s most successful business man. In Macau he has earned the nick name, “The King of Gambling.”
Mr. Ho was born in 1921 to one of the most influential clans in Hong Kong. It didn’t take him long to realize his place as one of the great members of the Ho family. At first he did not do well in school. However, after his father’s bankruptcy he realized that he could get ahead by hard work and studying. He applied himself and won a scholarship to the University of Hong Kong. He quickly gained success, and by age twenty-two he was a partner in a Chinese business firm, but it wasn’t in the casino industry. It is reported that Mr. Ho started off by means most would consider distasteful. Allegedly he cooperated with the Japanese during World War II. After the war he realized that construction was going to be key to the rebuilding of China both figuratively and literally. It wasn’t long after that he started to amass his wealth.
When Hong Kong decided to allowed gambling they gave Mr. Ho and his company a monopoly of the industry in Macau. This casino monopoly lasted for almost forty years until the government in Hong Kong was passed from Portugal to China. Mr. Ho has a very large family. His daughter Pansy Ho is co-owner of the MGM Macau casino with MGM Resorts International.
