There are many groups in the United States that can act as a voice for the American gambling public. These groups are usually not for profit. Their aim is to ensure that the rights of all American citizens are upheld. Most notable they stand for the right to choose. The United States has always been founded on the principle that a person as an individual and the people as a group have the right to decide for themselves. This covers everything from voting for leaders to building a publicly funded sports arena to gambling. Over the years the groups that stand up for gamblers’ right to choose have done so very diplomatically. They do not advocate an open market where anyone can gamble on anything at anytime. They want to work with lawmakers to make sure that fair laws are passed. Everyone who operates in the casino and gambling industry knows that the only way to make the industry profitable, fun, and sustainable in the long term is to enforce strict regulations. This is what these groups are after. Good laws protect the players, the gambling venues, and the areas affected by casinos. They also know that good taxes help everyone.
One would think on the offset that the recent crackdown by the United States Department of Justice on the online poker and gambling industry would infuriate groups that advocate the gambler’s right to choose. In truth, on the surface it has. Although these groups are not having the strong response one would think. The number one group that represents the gaming and gambling industry in the United States, the American Gaming Association, came out and praised the move to stop illegal gambling. Everyone from the casino operator to the serious high roller to the occasional gambler stands to lose from illegal gambling operations. Even though most groups want some sort of online gambling and/or poker laws, they do not want illegal online gambling to rule. No one is protected that way, and millions of dollars are shipped to overseas companies.
The American Gaming Association did not give its full support to the crack down on illegal online gambling. They called it a “half measure.” They do not feel it is good enough to block online gambling. They feel the only real way to control it is to legalize it and regulate it. It makes sense. One only has to look as far as a history book to realize that the ban on alcohol in the 1920’s and 1930’s did not work. It wasn’t until the government legalized and regulated alcohol that it became an issue that could be controlled. “The full solution is law enforcement and federally sanctioned state licensing and regulation of online poker for gaming companies that currently abide by U.S. law,” commented the American Gambling Association’s president, Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr. Most supporters of online gaming in the United States want to see the Unlawful Internet Gambling and Enforcement Act of 2006 repealed. However. they want it to be done smartly. The cite that the UIGEA is ambiguous. So, you see, the AGA is happy that illegal online gambling companies are being prosecuted. They are just unhappy that there is a need to do so.
