It is commonly called the American Dream, and it is taking place in the casinos and casino resorts of Las Vegas, Nevada. No, I am not talking about winning the progressive jackpot, or the World Series of Poker. (Although, that dream isn’t so bad either.) I am talking about the real American dream. Starting a business. Watching it grow. Making your name in your field, and seeing all your hard work come to fruition. This means taking chances. It means adapting, or more accurately, growing with the times. It means knowing what your customers want about a second before they know they want it and being able to deliver. So back to Las Vegas, there is one company that symbolizes the American Dream. It just so happens to be that that company is a race and sports book company. True, gambling can be a controversial business. However, when it is run well and highly regulated, casinos and gambling have as much to offer the American society as any other industry. This particular story deals with the evolution of a small company that has survived. It has grown in the shadows of the large casino resorts like a small plant under a forrest of oak trees. Now, it supports itself and contributes to the Las Vegas economy like any other business. In fact, it is even making its own headlines and blazing its own trail.
When Vic Salerno bought Leroy’s Race and Sports Book in April, 1978, it was a small, very small operation. It was wedged in a strip mall. In those days the stats and odds were kept on a chalk board. People filled out and handed in betting slips. Sports gambling was very low tech. Most sports books only showed whatever events were on the local network. Cable was had not developed yet. Many results were either phoned in or heard on the radio. There was also something called a teletype machine. Then one day Mr. Salerno decided to put a new thing called a satellite dish on top of his gambling shop. Now he could offer more viewing of more events. This is what the sports gambling public wanted, and the customers came. Now Leroy’s Race and Sports Book is a major company. They do more than just offer gambling. They offer gambling ideas. They have set up shop in some of the major casinos. Leroy’s was also able to obtain a license to offer mobile gambling to those who are inside Nevada by way of a BlackBerry App.
Mr. Salerno knows what every other good businessman knows. One has to adapt and grow. One also has to know when it is time to pull out and leave the operating to the next generation. By next generation I mean one of the largest gambling and online gambling operators in the world. And by pulling out I mean selling for $18 million. Mr. Salerno has sold his American Wagering Inc., which is responsible for Leroy’s to William Hill. William Hill is looking to move into the Las Vegas market. Mr. Salerno is looking for a return on his initial investment. It seems like a win-win for all.
