The Lake Las Vegas project was a good idea. This property is may be situated only a few miles from McCarran International Airport and the famous casino resorts of the Las Vegas strip, but it is a world away. That is what the developers wanted. If you take away the casual tourists who make their pilgrimage to Las Vegas once every couple of years the real Las Vegas lovers come and stay for a while. They own time shares or vacation homes. They don’t just come for gambling action and the night club scene. They come to be in the beauty of the American desert. They thrive on culture, class, and relaxation. They want to go fishing, see a show (a non-topless show), and play a lot of golf. They want a home away from home. That is what the developers of Lake Las Vegas set out to create. In fact, their closing tag line is, “It’s your home. It’s your home away from home. It’s Lake Las Vegas.
Lake Las Vegas has it all. It is close enough to Las Vegas to be a part of the action. However, it is far enough away to be secluded. It is nestled in the mountains. It’s centerpiece is, of course, Lake Las Vegas. It is a man made, 320 acre lake. The lake actually sits over the two pipes that are part of the Las Vegas Wash. The lake is surrounded by hotels, residences, theatres, golf courses, and other natural and man made wonders. Of course, there is a casino. However, there is just one. While it is an important part of the property the casino was not meant to be the main attraction. The lifestyle is. Still, there is a casino, but we will get to that later.
Sadly, Lake Las Vegas has run into some hard times. It was just gaining steam as the recession hit a few years ago. It was then that sales dropped off. American travelers just didn’t have the money to spend on those types of vacations and vacation homes. Many of the groups that owned properties such as the hotels had to file for bankruptcy, or just flat out pulled out of the project. Lake Las Vegas is still beautiful and a world class destination, it just lost a little bit of speed.
Of course, one of the attractions that was hardest hit by the recession was Lake Las Vegas’ casino, the Casino MonteLago. The 40,000 square-foot casino was forced to shut down sending many out without a job. However, there has been a concerted effort to bring the Casino MonteLago back to life. A new company, Intrepid Gaming opened the Lake Las Vegas casino this month. It is being run by the former chief executive officer of the now gone Las Vegas Gaming Inc., Jon Berkley. In a statement he noted how honored he and the rest of his team is to be reopening the doors of Casino MonteLago. Of course, they are proud to offer high class gaming to Lake Las Vegas, but they are even prouder of the fact they are creating jobs in this environment of economic uncertainty. Here’s to success.
