As the days go we are learning more and more how the world has been affected by the actions taken against the online poker and gambling industry by the United States Department of Justice. We know that millions of online poker players in the United States were suddenly and unexpectedly shut out of their favorite hobby. We know that many rival online poker sites started to ramp up their bonuses and promotions in an attempt to lure players who were worried their online poker sites would be shut down and their money would be lost. We know that the online poker sites affected, namely Absolute Poker, Full Tilt Poker, and PokerStars are in the throws of refunding millions of dollars to American players, and these sites will be spending just as much in legal and court costs if not fines. We know that many Las Vegas casino resort companies were starting to make deals with online poker companies in an attempt to be ready when the states or the federal government passed an online poker bill. Those American casino resort companies are starting to pull back from these deals. We know there has been a major dip in online poker traffic throughout the world to the tune of twenty-two percent. We know that professional poker players could lose their sponsorships are or leaving their home online poker site.
But what about the little guy? What about the guy (or girl) that plays online poker for fun. They will be just fine. Online poker is not illegal in the United States. Gambling on online poker is. As long as an online poker player is not wagering real money on the game he or she is fine. However, there is a whole different subset of online poker player, the college student. Some are playing online poker for fun. Some, though, have found a way of making some extra income, which we all know is a must for today’s college student in the United States. There are even some college students who have been able to pay for the studies by playing online poker. Well, not any amore.
Most online poker players know how to control themselves. Some have even found a way to make sure they are only making money. It is not that much different than playing the stock market. (Seriously, what could be a bigger gamble than that?)
Anyway, back to the college student/online poker player. Some college students have stated that they can make somewhere between $300 and $400 a day playing online poker. Let me say that again, $300 to $400 a day! Online poker seems to be a great tool for those who can master the skills. The money is good, you are your own boss, and the schedule is completely flexible. However, the money can be addictive. After the student leaves their institution of higher learning they must go out and find a job, preferably in the field in which they studied. For those who have made bank playing online poker it may be tough to find a job that can match that kind of money.
